Pumpkin carving

We finally got around to carving our pumpkins this year. Aaron's is on the left and he did all but the last inch or so of his mouth by himself. Deborah's is on the right. She told me what to carve.

Stephen designed the tiger pumpkin on the left, but had me carve it. Nathan had me help with the design but he did most of the carving himself. He left some of the stringy pulp inside the pumpkin since he said that it made the spider's web look better.

These look great! The spider web is especially creative.

Aaron did a great job carving by himself. If I remember right, he's about 7. At that age, what kind of knife do you let them use for carving?

I have a pumpkin carving knife that I got somewhere years ago. It is serrated but the points are rounded. So if the knife slips, it can't cut them.

We have been waiting until the children are 9 before they get a real pocket knife. So far, Nathan has treated his like a precious possession and hasn't had any major accidents.
