Geography Bee

Yesterday Nathan and Stephen participated in our local homeschool Geography Bee. They made it to the final round. Stephen is second from the left and Nathan is fourth from the left.

They didn't win, but they are ready to participate again next year. Some of the questions were very hard. I was trying to answer in my head and there were some questions that I got wrong. It's interesting how much geography you can pick up just by reading. I knew the answers to two questions because of novels that I've read in the past.

neat! Good job, boys! Is this the National Geographic-sponsored one that had a specific prep work that went along with it? Or did your boys go based on what they've learned in their normal course of study? Have you had geography as a subject all these years?

This is the Nat'l Geographic sponsored bee. We actually didn't prep for it because we originally weren't planning on being in it. But the organizer sent out a distress call on Monday saying that due to two students having to back out at the last minute, they were below their minimum of students necessary to even have the bee. So the boys volunteered to go to the bee so that there would be enough students to hold it.

We had studied geography a couple of years ago. The boys naturally like it because they enjoy seeing how battles are laid out or how boundaries of nations have changed. So a lot is picked up in history. But I think next year, they will do some more intense study.
