Apples and more Apples

We had a lot of apples this year.   I estimate that we harvested about 20 bushels of apples from our 9 trees.  This was our biggest harvest ever.
They were beautiful and we hardly had any bugs in them.
We had so many Red Delicious apples that we decided to make cider with them.   We took 8 bushels up to a friends' house.
She had picked some other types so the cider tasted delicious.   We used an old fashioned press and the children had a great time.

I've also made a lot of applesauce.   Good thing we love it so much!

Wow, that's awesome! To what do you owe your bumper crop of apples this year? Do you all do any special fertilizing or care? Do you have other varieties besides Red Delicious? And did you also make your delectable apple butter? We used your recipe this year and are enjoying it immensely!

Mostly the large crop is because last year we hardly had any apples due to a late frost. Apple trees are actually biennial so you have to trick them into producing every year by pruning and thinning your apple crop. So since they didn't have many last year, we had a bumper crop this year. Joe even thinned out 3 or 4 apples for every apple you see in the picture. Our branches were so heavy, we had to put props under them to keep them from breaking.

We have Ida Red and Red Delicious - all planted by the previous owner. I wish they had planted more varieties but we're happy with the trees now.

And yes, I made apple butter. And more applesauce. And I dried a lot of the Red Delicious apples. They make great dried apples.
