Deborah's Bible milestone

We have a tradition in our family that when a child has read their Bible all the way through and has been tested by my dh, that child gets a cake to celebrate this great milestone. We start when they are reading well enough to read the Toddler's Bible. Then they progress to the Picture Bible. The Picture Bible is a great Bible that I remember reading as a child. The next step is an NIrV (a NIV Bible for Readers - they identify the pronouns and try to use simplier words). Final Step is an ESV (English Standard Version) Study Bible.

This last weekend, Deborah successfully passed her Picture Bible test and received her new NIrV Bible. She was so thrilled to pass this important milestone.

Wow, that's an impressive accomplishment! Deb is in 1st or 2nd grade, right? As far as I could tell, that Picture Bible is about 800 pages! How long has she been working on this goal?

Beautiful cake, by the way. I love the light blue background. Reminds me of your magic blue table. :-)

Deb will be 7 in the spring. Yes, it is pretty long but it is in comic story book form. She's actually read it all the way through more than once. We just finally got around to testing her on her knowledge. The artist or artists who illustrated the Picture Bible did such a great job that it entices the child to keep on reading. Plus it is told in chronological order which helps the child figure out which story goes where.

And the cake design was hers. So far that is the first Bible cake we've had with flowers on it.

Great Job, Deborah!!!

What a neat tradition, too. What sort of things does the quiz cover?

The quiz covers both Old and New Testaments. We would ask questions about who people were and what did God do for them. Or we would ask, "Which prophet called down fire from heaven?" Or sometimes my dh would ask trick questions like, "How many animals did Moses bring into the ark?" Then usually the child would laugh and tell him that is was Noah, not Moses who built the ark.

Now her next quiz will be harder. When they finish the verse Bible, we require them to tell us something about each book of the Bible. It can be a verse that they have memorized from that book or the purpose of the book or a story from that book or the main theme.
